Inside the elevator machinery, Bolt tends the pressure valves as steam curls past riveted panels, dangling counterweights, copper tubing, and hand-painted floor numbers bolted to the cage wall.
At a high canopy landing hours later, the elevator opens onto a wooden platform wrapped around the tree, where Thalia and Tinker receive crates of tools and lanterns beside rope bridges leading into leafy workspaces.
By night, the full giant tree is visible from a distant ridge: the steam elevator glows as a tiny moving ember on the trunk, connecting root workshops, canopy platforms, and lantern-lit rooms hidden among leaves.
