Inside a cramped mine gallery, water seeps over timber braces and rises around abandoned buckets while mine workers gather at the shaft edge, tense and muddy, realizing the hand pumps are losing.

The next morning at the mine yard, a massive new steam engine arrives in pieces on a wagon while workers, managers, and mechanics crowd around it with skepticism and hope.

That night, the installed steam engine works alone in the engine room, piston rods flashing, belts shuddering, and pump beams hauling black water up through pipes into a steaming trough.

Several days later, the drained mine shaft opens into a newly passable tunnel; workers descend with lamps while the steam engine's smoke stack is visible far above through the vertical shaft, turning emergency into a new industrial routine.
